More details to this question:
do you need to file paperwork for the divorce before going to mediation? and once things are agreed upon do you then have to go to court for the official divorce or does mediation keep it completely out of court?

No, you can go to mediation before filing for divorce. If an agreement is reached at mediation, you still need a divorce decree signed by a judge.
