QUESTION

Parenting time continually denied

Asked on Aug 15th, 2022 on Child Custody - Michigan
More details to this question:
Last November, I put myself in drug rehab, went through detox, then the 21 day program. After I completed with a certificate, I immediately sought out an addiction doctor and got on Suboxone. I’ve now been on Suboxone since December 2021. My sons father has been harassing me asking about if I have a sponsor, do I go to meetings, etc. Basically things a probation or parole officer would ask. I am in no legal trouble whatsoever. I regularly see my Suboxone doctor, my regular internist doctor, my psych, my therapist, and a few months ago, got an emotional support dog. According to my sons father, my son hates me and doesn’t want to see me. I have attempted numerous times to reach out to the father via text messages so I have concrete proof, and receive nothing in reply. I didn’t want to have to think about court, but at this point I don’t know what else to do. The father is nothing but verbally abusive and doesn't take my recovery seriously.

First, congratulations on your recovery. At some point, you will have to go to court to assert your rights. Strategically, when you have been clean for a year, you can show the court that you have taken responsibility and are now doing all the right things to rebuild your life. When you have affidavits from your caregivers and recovery partners, that will look strong for your case. Start with getting visitation and then you can build to custody. For now, be patient but I would start to build your case with the ex that you really have changed. Tell him what your plan is, demonstrate you proving your commitment to that plan and he might start feeling different. You have to help him overcome his anger.' Being smart about it helps you win. I hope this helps but, put a calendar on the wall and check off each day until you are readly. Best of luck to you.
