My divorce is going on 6 months, I was told the spousal support would be reviewed at 3 months, nothing has happened. She switched lawyers and the first mediation got canceled. That was $630 for setting a mediation date. My lawyer then charged me $810 to reschedule and coordinate the second mediation that will most likely be rescheduled. He has blown through $4,500 on a case he intially told me should be 3 to 4k and be open and shut. I've already talked to him once and told him I have no more funds available. He credited my account $500 when I challenged him on billing in .25 increments for each thing, recieving a fax .25 + mailing it to me .25. Is this reasonable and ethical?
The amount that is charged should be according to a contract with your lawyer. There is no standard fee and the best way to deal with this situation is as you have done, to discuss it with the attorney and determine is they are the best choice for you. It is difficult to change attorneys after paying a sublstanial fee, but since the fee to date is current this is the time to consider the future of the relationship.
