QUESTION

Regarding IEP

Asked on Nov 25th, 2014 on Family Law - New Jersey
More details to this question:
I have been fighting with my sons school to test him for a possible IEP due to extreme behavior issues for almost 2 yrs, only in the school setting. After several request from myself and only after I went out and found my own school psychologist to due testing, and after he demanded in writing that the school supply my son with an IEP, my sons school agreed to test him. Now the testing is complete and the IEP Team agree that my son needs, an IEP. Here comes the current problem, I agree with the classification but I disagree with the Axis 1 diagnosis, now when I question the Avis 1, and asked that their doctor explain to me how he reached such s diagnosis, he refused to speak with me and requested that I put my request rewarding clarification in writing, which I did over 1 month ago, and the child study team refusing to implement the IEP that they all agree that my son needs, simply because I wish to put my my signature saying I agree with the IEP, but, I disagree with the diagnosis.

Its difficult because you are required to sign off on the IEP before they can implement the IEP.  The bottom line is always going to be the services your child receives, and whether or not your child can receive a meaningful education as a result of those services.  I am often involved in special education cases in which the parents do nt want the child diagnosed with one particular problem or another, and I remind them that what is important is the services, not the label.  Sometimes school districts or school pyschologists use a particular diagnosis to make services available.  You have your own report, and as long as the services you want are available, don't worry about the diagnosis.
