QUESTION

What can I do about potential child support payments?

Asked on Oct 26th, 2013 on Child Support - New York
More details to this question:
I had intercourse with a friend of mine, only a friend of mine and nothing more, and used protection as I always do. It has been about 2 and half weeks and she informed me that she is pregnant. I know I am the only guy that's been with her in a year and she took 3 tests that all came out positive. Unfortunately for me, I absolutely do not want a child or any sort of relationship with her at all. She also says she is going to keep it, so I have no choice in the matter at all. I know she is going to make me pay for it, but I feel that since I did everything in power to have safe sex and still resulted in a pregnancy, I shouldn't be forced into paying for her decision to keep it.

You can get a paternity test to confirm your paternity. Once the baby is born, you can also see if she's willing to agree on an amount and avoid court. Perhaps it isn't what you wanted, but you are going to be a parent. How you approach that role will be up to you. It may be worth it to talk to a therapist or trusted friend/parent and deal with your own feelings about the situation. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball and we have to deal with it, but having a good relationship with your own child is a good thing. This new person is going to call you "Dad." Find a way to accept that role, even if you don't want to be with "Mom." Figure out a way not to take out Mom's unilateral decisions on the child - after all the child didn't have a choice in the matter either. Good luck.
