QUESTION

Will child support payments be put on hold? Can they be increased?

More details to this question:
Hi, I'm looking for advice on child support. My son will be 4 in August. We have not seen his father in over 3 years. He was court ordered almost 2 years ago to pay $14/week in child support. He's paid it about 6 times. I called the state to see what I should do but kept getting the run around and eventually gave up since it was such a small amount of money anyway. Now he is taking me back to court to try to get the child support put on hold. He says he has no income and he has several kids he's paying child support to (which he also doesn't pay). We live in RI and it seems like the law is only protecting the dead beat father and not the kids... I make under $25,000 a year and am struggling to pay my bills and take care of our son on my own. I have no idea what to do. Any advice on getting the child support raised and do you think they will put his payments on hold??

It all depends on how much he makes, or if he the court determines he is not making as much as he could, it depends on how much the court thinks he should be making.      File a motion to increase child support or retain an attorney to do it on your behalf.
