Will it be a difficult process to adopt my stepson?

More details to this question:
My girlfriend and I have been together for the last 2 years. We have discussed it that I would like to officially adopt my stepson. The father has been in prison for last 6 years, and is also not on my stepson’s birth certificate.

You will most likely need an attorney because you will have to terminate dad's rights first. Sometimes it's difficult to get documents served to the prison if you are not an attorney.
