QUESTION

Do unmarried partners have access to the other's finances?

Asked on Dec 16th, 2014 on General Practice - New Jersey
More details to this question:
I have lived with someone for 4 years now and we have a child together. The house and every bill and every bank account are solely in my name. What rights does he have if we separate as far as money, house, etc? Is there any way he can say part of the house is his since he has given me cash towards the mortgage? Can he say part of the bank accounts are his as well even though his name isn't on anything?

If the matter proceeds to court, the judge will consider the evidence submitted. For example, how much did each partner contribute towards the living expenses ? Who worked ? What was their compensation ? How were the bills paid ? Who paid for the medical insurance ? The judge will take into consideration all of the factors to decide. If we knew the answers to the above questions, we could give you a more precise answer. Please call to discuss. Ed Dimon 732-797-1600
