How should this be handled

More details to this question:
My home was broken into by safeguard properties going on a year now and I have been trying to get some assistance to get my belongings and money returned to me. I do not know how to go about filing a suit because the person that was trying to assist wanted to settle for $1000. There was over $100,000 in belongings that was stolen as well as a lock put on my back door- all done illegally.

What is Safeguard Properties?  If you can prove what was taken you can file a suit, but an illegal break-in is a crime and you should have called the police.  One year is a long time and the failure to act promptly will impact your credibility.
