More details to this question:
Hi, I came here with Fiance visa 9I94) a couple of months ago, got married a month ago and have marriage certificate now. I have Social Security card too, and applied for Green card and waiting. But when I went to DMV to get driving permit, they said 'You need to have Green Card to request for a permit', oh God it takes about 6 to 7 months until I get my Green card(I called to USCIS Chicago and confirmed that it takes about 7 months to process). Should I just sit and wait? Is the DMV right? How can I move, shop, register to classes, pay other bills, etc without driving to? Please I need a response, am in trouble. Thank you!

Each state has different rules about who may apply for a permit or driver's license. Most states allow an individual who has prof of lawful status in the United States to obtain a permit or driver's license. You should check eligiblity requirements on the DMV's website. There may be documentation you can provide to obtain a permit.
