QUESTION

Applying for UK Citizenship, still on green card

Asked on Oct 19th, 2013 on Immigration - Florida
More details to this question:
I am on a green card and eligible for US Citizenship for a while now but haven't pulled the trigger. I am originally from South Africa and my parents are British nationals. Due to a recent change in law, I am able to apply for British Citizenship through my mother (I was born before 1983) and I would like to obtain this as my parents and sister now live there and it makes it easier to travel back and forth. What I don't know is if this will void my green card standing or hamper my application for us citizenship? I plan to give up my South African citizenship as I have no desire to ever move back there. I know the US doesn't formally acknowledge dual citizenship but I most concerned about loosing my US residency.

Obtaining a new nationality should not have any effect upon the validity of your green card. Neither should it hamper your later application for US citizenship. The US does respect the concept of dual citizenship, especially with an ally like the UK.Due to the limitations of the Lawyers.com Forums, Alan Lee, Esq.'s (the "Firm") participation in responding to questions posted herein does not constitute legal advice, nor legal representation of the person or entity posting a question.
