Are you out of status on a religious visa if an organization doesn''t follow through on their promise of covering you with their 501c3? Can it be fixed

More details to this question:
A missionary friend has a religious visa and was working for a 501c3. He was offered a new position, but when he moved to the new place, things went sour and he was denied the position. Does this mean he is out of status? Can he find another 501c3? Can he get his status changed? Is he in danger of being deported? What are the options and what is the best course of action. He does not want to violate any laws and would like to stay in the US for the duration of his visa.
He's out of status and will need to return to his home country. He can return on a new R-1 visa from a 501(c) 3 organization. If he overstays, he is subject to deportation for illegal presence.
