QUESTION

Can an attorney refuse to give his bar number?

Asked on Aug 18th, 2011 on Immigration - California
More details to this question:
Someone saying he is an attorney called my cousin who is an illegal immigrant telling her someone put her down as a reference when buying a radio and he has not paid so she now has 72 hours to pay the amount or go to court. I tried asking for bar number he refuses to give that to us says we need an attorney and then he will disclose the information. He called me back and left me a very rude voicemail.

Attorneys should be open to such inquiry. You may also check with the State Bar in your jurisdiction and verify. Most state bars have such information including any record of discipline if any. Another way is to google the attorney's name and check his/her website.

I do not know the answer to this but suggest you check with the State Bar of the State where the attorney is located to file a complaint if appropriate. Not clear if the person calling is even an attorney or a scammer
