To apply for a work permit, there must be an underlying application for an immigration benefit such as for instance, an adjustment of status application

If you entered the US before June 15, 2007 and are currently under 30 years old, you may qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). If your case is approved, you will be granted a work permit that you may renew every 2 years.
