Can he work and take some college courses while he waits for green card?

More details to this question:
I'm an American and my boyfriend is Bahamian. Can we get married in the US and he remains in the US with me while we file the paper work for him to become a citizen or does he have to go back to his country & wait?

He will be eligible for interim employment authorization once you are married and file for his permanent residence on the basis of marriage.

He should stay and wait until he receives his green card before travelling outside the US. There is no requirement that he leave. In fact, leaving the US will complicate his situation. The entire process should take 3 months from start to finish if done right :).

I don't have enough information to render an opinion. Is he in the country legally now. Does he have a criminal history? In many cases, you can apply here, prepare a waiver here, and wait in the US until it's time for his appointment in the Bahamas.
