QUESTION

Can I apply j1 in future with assylum denial

Asked on Dec 18th, 2015 on Immigration - Illinois
More details to this question:
I am on f1 status right now. I get asylum denial 2014.i am still maintaining my f1 status. Maybe in future I need to change my status to j1 and I would like to change in the USA and not go back Indonesia where I am origin from. I know it takes couples months 5-7 months. Is there anything I can do make it faster? And with my asylum denial history will it disqualified to apply j1 visa. One more thing I am in process Mavni, I have not signed contract. Is it better I change my status first to j1(my estimate that I will get my paper start on April 2016) then I sign my Mavni contract. I can't get my citizenship on time that's the reason I need j1 for my medical residency training work. I have been living for 4 years in the USA on f1 status visa. My visa f1 will expired December 2016. Thank you

You cannot exercise the change of status process. It is currently taking 4-6 months for USCIS to process a change of status request. The only way to obtain a J-1 visa faster would be to apply for a visa at a consular post. However, you will likely face difficulty obtaining a J-1 visa or status given your immigration history. Filing for asylum is evidence that indicates you do not intend to return to your native country. You should focus your energy on MAVNI.
