QUESTION

Can I get citizenship through my dad even though he's already dead?

Asked on Dec 19th, 2014 on Immigration - Utah
More details to this question:
My dad became a citizen when I was 15 but he passed away when I turned 18. I was born in Thailand and came here to the US when I was 7 years old. He became a citizen in another state, not where I live. I want to know if I can get my citizenship through him.

It may be possible to derive citizenship from your father, but much will depend on dates and how you entered the U.S. You should consult with an attorney before making a claim to U.S. citizenship as a false claim could do more damage than good.

Maybe. I would need to know more facts about whether you lived with him at the time he became a citizen and also what year you were born. Talk to an immigration lawyer about your complete circumstances to see if you qualify for derivative citizenship.
