QUESTION

Can I sue a residency program?

Asked on Mar 17th, 2012 on Immigration - Texas
More details to this question:
I am an international medical graduate who applied for residency last year. I got accepted at a hospital in Minneapolis, MN. I was supposed to start my residency on June 2011. I applied for a job visa at the embassy of US in my home country Syria. I paid 3000 dollars. However, the situation in the country was exceptional. The embassy of US closed and I couldn't get the visa to join the program at the appropraite time. Although I asked them to wait for me just for few weeks, the residency program canceled my contract on August. I got the visa just 10 days after they canceled my contract. At that time they said they will consider and rank me for the match this year. There were 6 other Syrians who were late for their programs and they got their visas months after I did, still they were able to catch their residency. I got the match results this March and I was surprised that the hospital didn't take me as a resident this year. Can I sue the hospital or the program for the wasted time and money or for the stress they caused to me?

It is doubtful that it would be practical. In the U.S. anyone can sue but success is not likely and the cost high.
