How often and for how long can a Canadian legally visit the United States as a visitor? I keep hearing conflicting answers of either 183 days per year and 183 days at-a-time. Also, I have heard that one's exit from the US back to Canada is not well tracked, so how likely is it that U.S. POE authorities would know a Canadian has overstayed? If US authorities do in fact have very good records of how long Canadians stay inside US borders, what would be the best way to maximize visitation time without significant risk of being denied entry again?
If you arrive through an airport most often they will stamp a 6-month (180 day) limit from the date of entry but it could be less time. It gets a bit tricky when your passport is not stamped with a date to leave by. When leaving the U.S., make sure to keep boarding passes, plane tickets, and other documents to prove you actually left the U.S. on time to prevent problems in the future.
