QUESTION

Child Support and Immigration what can be done?

Asked on Jun 24th, 2012 on Immigration - Maryland
More details to this question:
Hello I am writing to find out if there is anything that can be done to help my father. My father is a native of Haiti but has been in the US for many years. He became a citizen in 2004. Also in that year his passport was taken due to owing back child support in the amount of $14,000. Since that time he has paid and now owes only $6,000. My Father would like to go home to Haiti, to visit his sick and dying mother and father. My question is if there is anyway that the government can grant him some kind of temporary status/passport that he may be able to visit his mom and dad? Or if there is really anything that we can do? PS.We have asked the family at home to send any information to my father that can show that his mom and dad are very sick.

Hello, I would suggest that you contact your local child support government authority to let them know of your payment arrangement for the outstanding child support and enquire about an early termination of the passport suspension now that payments are being made. Do take any necessary documentation to show the urgent need for travel. Good luck.  Disclaimer: This information is of a general nature and is not, nor is it intended to be, legal advice.
