QUESTION

citizenship marital history

Asked on Jun 06th, 2016 on Immigration - Texas
More details to this question:
I want to apply for citizenship. I have been a resident for 5 years. I got my green card through work. I had my h1b for 10 yrs with the same employer (renewed when i had to). I am married to an american citizen (3yrs). I was going over the mock interviews I found online and I saw how much emphasis they put on marital history. This made me realize a very stupid mistake I made when I first applied for my h1b 15 yrs ago.I marked "single" when l should've marked "divorced". I was in my late 20s back then and I thought it was not big deal whether I put single or divorced. I married the first time in my country but never lived with that person. We were still in college and marrying was something very stupid that we did and ended after 2 yrs. I never felt "marrried" and I always put "single" in every application I filled (until now that I am married). It didnt affect (they never found out) every time I applied for my h1bs or green card. Now I am freaking out. What should I do?

You need to be truthful when completing your naturalization application. You will need to disclose the prior marriage and provide documentation regarding the divorce. You also need to be prepared to answer questions about why you never disclosed the marriage in the past. I recommend you work with an attorney.
