QUESTION

Could I help my friend become a citizen?

Asked on Sep 01st, 2015 on Immigration - Texas
More details to this question:
My friend came to this country when she was 2 years old. Her mother became a US citizen but a lawyer messed up her paper work, can anything be done for her? She is 27 years old now and the only undocumated person in her family. She has no one in her country of birth.

On the facts you stated, it is possible that your friend is already a citizen of the U.S. The rules of deriving citizenship through parents are complicated, so your friend should talk to an immigration attorney about it.

You asked about helping your friend. If by that you meant petitioning for your friend, note that there is no visa category by which a person, whether a U.S. citizen or otherwise, may sponsor a friend. There really is no substitute for your friend consulting with an immigration attorney who, after learning all of the relevant information, could advise her about immigration eligibilities, options and strategies. You could help your friend by encouraging her to get professional immigration advise based upon the specific details of her situation. Some immigration law firms, including mine, offer legal services on a "flat fee" basis so that a client will know the total expense from the very beginning, and a few immigration law firms, including mine, offer an initial consultation free of charge.
