QUESTION

Do we really have to pay for the I-485 form?

Asked on Apr 17th, 2015 on Immigration - New York
More details to this question:
My mom is an American citizen and I’m not. She applied for my citizenship and already filed the I-130 form. I’m going into my senior year and I need to be able to get a job. Money is tight and I want to know if there is any way we don’t have to pay the fee or if we can do something else? I just want to do the right thing.

If your mother became a citizen while you were under the age of 18 and you were living with her in the U.S. and had a green card - then you are already a citizen of the United States, and do not need Form I-130 or I-485. If you do not yet have a green card, it would make sense to have an immigration attorney review your case before you spend any more money on government fees.
