Does she need to have a valid passport before applying for citizenship?

More details to this question:
A couple holds a green card for more than five years and is qualified to apply for US citizenship. Wife's passport expired about 8 months ago. Will there be any problem? Thanks.

If by this, you mean the couple's passport of their original homeland, the validity of their foreign passports, except as a means of identification should not have any bearing on their application for naturalization, if they are otherwise eligible to naturalize. But note until they become US citizens, and for other reasons not connected with their wish to naturalize, they should have a valid passport of their country

A valid passport is not required to apply for U.S. citizenship.

Passport is a requirement for travel/visa purposes, it can be renewed concurrently though, and its good to always have an unexpired passport anyway.

There is no law requiring a person to have a valid foreign passport in order to be naturalized.
