My friend is about to attend an interview for h1B visa. His I-797 is valid until 9/30/2018. However, his passport expires on 9/20/2017. If issued until full duration, what will dictate the expiration of visa (passport or I-797)? Thank you.

Your friend will most likely be issued a visa that expires no later than the expiration date of his passport.

Your friend's entry will be limited to the duration of the passport and not the visa. Thus, he should double check his I-94 online after he arrives. The visa should be good to 09/2018.
