I'd been married to a legal citizen of the United States for almost a year. We are a gay couple and we are wondering if we have the same rights as a heterosexual couple when it comes down to a petition for legalizing my immigration status in the country

Yes, Gay married couples are entitled to the same Immigration benefits as straight married couples.
