More details to this question:
Born in India, have an Australian citizenship. Have been living in US for 10 years currently doing PhD, so wanting to know if eligible to apply for a green card through a lawyer

You will need a basis to apply for a green card regardless of whether you retain an attorney. Most individuals are able to adjust status to permanent resident through a family-based or employment-based immigrant visa. It is not clear whether either is a viable option for you.
