QUESTION

Green Card processing with FNU in name

Asked on Jul 18th, 2013 on Immigration - New Jersey
More details to this question:
Hello, does FNU in a name create an issue in Green Card processing? My wife doesn't have a last name so US consulate in my country used FNU as her first name on visa and her first name as her last name. She has an h1b approval from USCIS with FNU as her first name and last name as her first name. I'm assuming USCIS already has her in record. I'm working in US on h1b and she's currently in US on h4 but has a valid approved h1b petition with FNU in her name

FNU now appears to be a well-known acronym for “first name unknown”. I do not think that U.S.C.I.S. will require your wife to obtain a birth certificate including the name FNU. If she obtains a birth paper with only the one name, that should be acceptable. If your wife has just one name, you can explain this throughout the application and interview process and it should not present a problem, particularly if the name matches the documents you provide (regardless of whether the names shows up under first or last name).  Be sure to include a letter of explanation with the filing.
