H1B Processing Ongoing, should one apply for a STEM OPT extension also?

Hello, I am currently on a STEM OPT that expires this August. This will be the first 12 months of that OPT. I am eligible for the OPT extension thereafter. My company has applied for my H1B, and i wanted to know whether it would be wise to apply for my OPT extension while waiting to hear back regarding a decision on my H1B status.
