How can I transfer from a valid F-1 visa with I-20 to a new J-2 visa with DS-2019 without having to leave the USA ?

More details to this question:
I'm in the PhD program on F1 visa with valid I-20 document. I will discontinue the program after 2 months. My wife has a J1 visa with a vaild DS2019 document. I do not wish to leave the US to apply for J2 visa and then re-enter. I would like to apply for a DS2019 and be able to stay in the country legally.

Hello. You can file an I-539, change of status request. You can find the instructions and form at USCIS.gov. If you need help, feel free to let me know. You need to be careful and provide all necessary documents on time when you submit.
