QUESTION

How do I get a copy of my citizenship paper?

Asked on May 02nd, 2016 on Immigration - Ohio
More details to this question:
I lost my citizenship paper during a move. Just to get a copy of the paper they are charging me almost as much as it cost to get the citizenship in the first place. My mom was born a U.S. citizen, I have lived here since i was 6 years old and i am now 26. When i first got the citizenship paper about 7 years ago they told me i didnt even have to go through that process because i was a citizen all along. My question is how do i get a paper to prove that i am a citizen without having to pay another $400.

Unfortunately, the only way to obtain a copy of your certificate of citizenship is to complete the form and pay the filing fee. You may be able to obtain a copy through the Freedom of Information Act but this would not be acceptable evidence of citizenship. It would simply be a photocopy of the original certificate.
