QUESTION

How does a U.S. citizen obtain a working visa for Hong Kong?

Asked on Jun 27th, 2014 on Immigration - Texas
More details to this question:
I am currently unemployed but my previous company wants to re-hire me for an overseas position in Hong Kong. They asked if I could get to Hong Kong myself without financial assistance so they can hire me as a local for internal approval process as relocation positions are very hard to get approved in my company. But when I looked into this, this did not make sense. They were not sure either. So even if I go there as a personal trip and get hired, I will still need to get sponsored by the company and travel back to the U.S. and then back to Hong Kong before I can work. Could you help me understand what options I have in obtaining a work visa in Hong Kong?

You need to speak to the Human Resources in your company or better still talk to an attorney familiar with the HK immigration law.

Normally, the company must sponsor you for employment authorization and then you can have a visa issued at the consulate of China in the U.S. You may need to schedule a consultation with a lawyer so you can provide more details and they can help you and your company to develop a strategy for obtaining employment authorization.
