How long can ICE detain a person?

More details to this question:
A friend of mine is being detained in ICE. They have been there since April 16, 2014. It seems that on their status states pending but so far the country will not accept them back. When trying to get answers from ICE counselors the answer is they do not know what is going on.

Generally, there is no deadline. Theoretically they could hold a person forever, unless there is a legal challenge. The Supreme Court has issued some guidelines, but there is no requirement of an immediate release at any specific point.
