To start the process, you have to file an I-130 Immigrant Petition. It will take about 2.5 years before your wife will be called for an interview at a U.S. Embassy. It is a long time, but it will not start running until you file the petition. If you become a U.S. citizen, you will notify the USCIS to upgrade your petition, and the process will become much faster. There might be some ways to bring your wife to the U.S. sooner so she could wait for her green card here. One of such ways is getting her a student visa, if you can support her education in the U.S. for the time until an immigrant visa is ready for her. This, and other possibilities should be discussed with your immigration attorney.

If you are a permanent resident, the process takes about 3 years for your wife to be eligible for an immigrant visa to come to the US as your spouse.

As a resident, it takes 2.5 years give or take. As a citizen, about 1 year.
