QUESTION

How long is H1B visa valid without SSN?

Asked on Nov 26th, 2013 on Immigration - California
More details to this question:
I had come to the US on F2 visa. Recently my H1B visa was approved. Unfortunately, I lost my passport a few days back and therefore I cannot apply for SSN now. I have applied for a new passport and am waiting for it. I should get it in around a couple of weeks. My employer is willing to wait for some time so that I get my SSN. Apart from that, is there any problem with my not being able to start working immediately?

You should go to the SSA and inquire as to whether you can use any other form of ID, together with the H-1B approval notice to apply for the social security number. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or how I can be of further assistance to you in this matter.

I see no reason why you cannot legally work. Your right to work is dependent on your H1b which has now been approved.

As long as you are maintaining your F-2 and your spouse is in school then the time to wait should not be a factor.
