If wife's birth certificate is missing is it going to be a problem in the interview?

Asked on Jan 04th, 2013 on Immigration - Michigan
More details to this question:
I have interview for AOS to permanent resident through marriage to US Citizen (my wife's naturalized USC) on 4th Feb. The list of docs says we need to bring each of our birth certificates. My wife has translated version and certified copy of her BC but she has lost her original Birth Certificate (Colombian). Please help me.

She should get an original birth certificate. If it does not arrive by Feb 4, you could request a continuance for good cause shown.

If your wife has a *certified* copy of her birth certificate, it should be ok. Just make certain that she has her original Certificate of Naturalization (or her original U.S. passport, or both).

That should be fine. You would have probably submitted the copy to the USCiS at the time of filing so they have the copy. If they request the original, you can find out how long it will take to obtain it from the authorities in Colombia and let the USCIs know at the time of the interview.

Usually, only the beneficiary's birth certificate is needed. Your wife has her citizenship certificate and/or US passport? That should be good enough.

A certified copy of the birth certificate is fine as long as you have an original certification.
