QUESTION

I'm from the Bahamas, can I get asylum here in the US?

Asked on Sep 28th, 2012 on Immigration - Florida
More details to this question:
I was told by lawyers when I got here, I have no case because the Bahamas is considered a friendly nation with the US. I was harassed constantly by police whiles there, could not find work & was always kicked out of places I lived. When I had to beg for help, the police went around telling people not to give to me. They followed me & laughed openly at me whenever I went anywhere. A lawyer said I must prove that the government itself was involved & I had no case. I just read that any public official not just can be regarded as perpetrators of torture. I was beaten up.. I could go on. I need asylum.

The question is why were you treated this way?  Was it because of your race, religion, nationality or membership in a particular social group?  It is possible to obtain asylum if non-governmental actors are the persecutors, but the basis of the persecution must be one of those listed above.
