I am an American living abroad with my foreign wife. We have one child (US citizen) and are not intending to go to the US for a few years but we are having marital problems and want to know if we divorced whether she would still be able to immigrate as a family. Could I sponsor an ex wife?

There is no ex wife category that provides immigration benefits. Her son could sponsor her once he reaches the age of 21.
