QUESTION

Is there any type of visa that has validity over 1 year?

Asked on Apr 03rd, 2013 on Immigration - California
More details to this question:
My husband is born and raised in USA. We are married in USA but we choose to live and work in Europe. Obtaining a visa for myself each year to visit the family in USA has been a hassle and expensive as well. My question is: is there any type of visa that has validity over 1 year (we don’t mind if the actual permission of stay is 180 days). We just want to avoid paying each year for a visa. Also, could we be applying for a green card while living abroad, but with the intention of just being able to visit as often as we want and not for obtaining a passport? We read that in order to get a passport we have to stay in USA for at least 3 years and that is not our intention. Thank you for your help.

It really depends on what country you are a citizen of. Some countries have different reciprocity tables for visa issuance with the US. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or how I can be of further assistance to you in this matter.

You may want to set a consultation to fully explore what your options are. Your husband's current employment may factor in to your options. However, it is also possible that there isn't really a better option than visitor visas, depending upon the full situation and your long term plans.

The Consulate is allowed to issue a B-1/B-2 visa for up to ten years. However this is at their discretion. If they do not want to issue it for that long, then you will be stuck with renewing each year.
