QUESTION

Should she apply for the free mammogram based on her current status?

Asked on Aug 26th, 2016 on Immigration - New York
More details to this question:
I signed affidavit support for my mom when she applied for a green card. She has chest pain and we found a place that can honor grant for mammogram based on her income. She'll get it for free. Would it have any negative impact on her status or on me since I signed the affidavit support for her?

Technically, you promised that you will take care of your mother's financial needs, including the costs of her medical care. If the income-based grant for the mammogram is administered by a government agency, it should not be taken. If the grant is from a private fund or organization, it is outside of your obligations under the affidavit of support. In any event, your mother should have the procedure. If the government later will ask you to repay the grant, you will find a way to do it (they usually give payment plan according to your ability to pay). If your mother does not get the medical care she needs, will you find a way to live with the consequences?

It depends on if the "free" service is sponsored by the State or Federal government or some other source.
