QUESTION

Visa options

Asked on Apr 20th, 2021 on Immigration - Missouri
More details to this question:
Hi, so a close friend of mine who lives in Peru and I were wanting to visit each other and see if we had a spark or not. If we do, what kinds of visa options would we have for dating, work and potentially marriage? Wanting to do some research as a possible immigration on her part is obviously both big and scary, and expensive so the more information we have going in beforehand means less chance of running afoul of the law and all. This is my first foray into a relationship with someone outside the US and I confess the only experience I have with immigration extends to showing my military ID on deployments.... Any help and input is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

So a United States citizen can sponsor a foreign national for a fiancée visa, but they need to physically meet that person within two years from the date that they apply for the visa. Once the visa is issued, she can travel to the United States, and must marry the US citizen within 90 days of arrival. After that she can adjust status to get her green card. This is the most common route that most couples take in order to gain lawful status for the foreign national. She could also file to get a visitors visa at the US consulate in Peru, but those are hard to get unless she can claim that she has a very good job, and she owns real estate that would motivate her to return to her country.
