QUESTION

What are my legal responsibilities?

Asked on Dec 04th, 2016 on Immigration - Florida
More details to this question:
My 18 year old step-son has moved out on his own. I sponsored him to the United States and he's currently on a permanent visa that expires in 2024. I do not want to be responsible for his medical or financial requirements. What are my responsibilities and what's required to eliminate all/any reaponsibility?

You signed a Form I-864 in order for your stepson to become a lawful permanent resident. Your obligations to support your stepson do not end simply because he moved out of the family home. Your obligations under the affidavit of support will only end upon your stepson (1) becoming a U.S. citizen, (2) no longer being a permanent resident and departing the U.S., (3) obtaining lawful permanent residence through adjustment of status in removal proceedings, (4) earning or being credited with 40 quarters under the Social Security Act, or (5) passing away.
