What is the process to change a visa from L1 to E2?

More details to this question:
I have a L1 visa. I got a job offer, and the new employer offers to sponsor me for a E2. What is the process? Do I need to quite my current job (and then take the risk to lose my visa) before being sponsored by the new employer? Can the new employer sponsor me for a E2 visa while I already have a L1 visa? Thanks!
