More details to this question:
entered the US legally on a J1...before the visa expired I applied to a college for further education, all relevant forms were handed to immigration office, my sponsor then could fulfill the requirements, by then my visa had expired already ...I then looked for another sponsor, found one and applied to another school, got accepted, but I have a problem with SEVIS now, because technically I am illegal. what can I do? if I return home, will I have problems at the airport?
If your visa expired, you would have to obtain another one when you leave the US. Assuming that you have a new J-1 visa, you should not have a problem at the airport when you return. It would not appear that you are eligible for an extension of status in the States as your J-1 has already expired.
