What options does a US citizen have to help her gain status?

My niece is 17 years old and will be graduating from high school with honors. She came to the country from Africa in 2008.

If she wasn't in lawful student visa status, then she must try to avoid unlawful presence which begins to count after her 18th birthday. If she stays more than 180 days over her 18th birthday, then she can be banned from entering the U. S. for at least 3 years. I strongly recommend an appointment with a competent and experienced immigration attorney as soon as possible. Good luck.
