The process by which a foreign national who entered the U.S. lawfully and with inspection and who is married to a U.S. citizen may become a U.S. citizen involves these steps with this timeframe: 1) The couple must apply for "adjustment of status" by which the foreign national may become a Lawful Permanent Resident (get a "Green Card") 2) Generally, commencing 90 days before the end of three years of the date the foreign national became a Permanent Resident, the foreign national may file a petition for naturalization. 3) The USCIS is inconsistent in the amount of time it takes to adjudicate a naturalization petition, but generally a properly completed and fully documented case processed through the USCIS's Atlanta Field Office (covering all of Georgia and Alabama) takes about four months. Please note that the naturalization process includes, among other things, a test of a petitioner's skills with the English language, and it may be worthwhile for you to consider taking English as a Second Language instruction. 3 years from the date your green card was issued, if you received your green card through marriage and are still married to you U.S. citizen spouse. Otherwise, 5 years from the date your green card was issued.
If you remain married to your US citizen spouse, you can apply for US citizenship after you have been a resident for at least 2 years and 9 months and have lived in the US for at least 1.5 years.
