QUESTION

Whom can I speak to about my eligibility to apply for asylum?

Asked on Aug 10th, 2013 on Immigration - Florida
More details to this question:
I am from Egypt and am currently here on a student visa. I am afraid to return home because my home is less than a mile away from the violent riots. I am trying to apply for asylum but I need to know if my case has any chance before I spend the money. Many law firms require me to make an appointment to find out any of this information. These appointments are very expensive. Is there anyone I can talk to for free to discuss my options?

Your fear of being caught up in random violence is not grounds for asylum.  If you fear you will be persecuted because of your political beliefs (or some other personal reason), particularly if you have been persecuted in the past for this, then you may be eligible for asylum.  I would be happy to talk to you on the phone about this if you want to call me (my number is listed in my profile on this site).
