Will I be detained if I do not renew my visa?

More details to this question:
I am an American, recently I went to the American Consulate in China to renew my passport because it had only 3 months left until it expires. It was denied renewal due to child support arrears. My current Chinese visa is still valid for one more month but the consulate cancelled my passport only and left the visa valid until i return and they will give me only a temporary one-way passport to return to the U.S. Will I be detained at the airport by the police?

It is more likely to be no but it also depends on other factors.

You may or may not. It depends on how your state (in the US where you have residency) enforces child support law.
