More details to this question:
my friend entered usa with a valid canadian passport. he recently was jailed for domestic dispute and it was discovered he had overstayed his visitation rights. bail for the domestic dispute is 5,000.00. is it best to pay his bail or will it be for nothing as he is also being held for immigration problems.
If your friend has a conviction for an agravated felony, he is not entitled to an immigration bond and would be held without bond anyway, so paying the state court bail would not result in immediate release from custody (but may result in a change of custody to a different facility--maybe one farther away from home). If there is no conviction (yet), or if the conviction is not considered an "agravated felony" for immigration purposes, then paying the bail will help, though he may still have to pay an immigration bond as well.
