Can I copyright my software?

More details to this question:
I developed software that acts as an interface to a 3rd party software. The program I developed does not contain any code from said 3rd party software. It was developed using a confidential manual acquired through my current employer. With out said 3rd party software, my program does not do anything.

You can copyright software you created. Functionality is irrelevent. If you create a copyrightable work, you can get a copyright on what you create. You can probably file the application on your own reading instructions at www.copyright.gov.
